965. Role of a Gym is to give us more freedom

A Gym helps us to gain more freedom over our body, to give us better abilities. The main areas are 1.Flexibility and dextrousness; 2.Strength or Power; 3.Stamina, Endurance or Staying Power.

Examples of restrictions which happen.
1. We are unable to do some muscle movements. This is lack of flexibility. Bending fully in front, back or the sides. Extending our hand over and down our shoulder, to touch our backbone. Lift a leg beyond half our height. Many of us even find it difficult to bend our knees, to sit on the floor.

If we try, we get cramps, dislocations or fractures. For example, try to bowl a ball for cricket, with full force. Without regular practice, your shoulder can get dislocated. Or jump down from a bench. You can easily get a fracture.

But regular Gym work gives us muscle flexibility. We are able to extend our arms/ legs, twist and bend easily, without pain. Our body becomes more elastic.

2. Some of us, particularly those in our middle age, we get tired too soon. This is low stamina, and can be easily improved. We are unable to hold our breath while swimming, even for a short duration. We are unable to dance, climb stairs little faster, or even run short distances. For example, to catch a bus. If we try, we breathe so hard, our heart beats like mad, we may even get chest pain. The risk is real, we can get a heart attack this way. But the Gym work gives us stamina. It makes our heart and lungs stronger.

3. We are unable to exert muscle strength. Like lifting something, bending or twisting something. A Gym increases our muscle capacity dramatically, so that we are able to lift a heavier item with the smallest effort.

When we try to develop a new physical skill, like dancing, swimming, karate, or even simple jogging, we find our physical abilities need to improve. Particularly Flexibility and Stamina. Sometimes the ability to lift heavy things. Suitable exercises at a Gym will achieve this and provide us with more flexibility, stamina and muscle strength to improve any of these skills.

An overall effect that proper Gym Work achieves is that it takes us out of the pain zone for the rest of our day. For instance, we do not feel tired and exhausted after climbing stairs. People who do not exercise suffer pain and exhaustion for every work they do, throughout the day. This is particularly true about older people, but applies to everyone.

Though many of us find Gym sessions(or any exercise) uncomfortable and strenuous, it is only for a short period of time in a day. But it removes the physical strain and discomfort for the rest of the day. That is good.
